Three new SSPs issued in response to the shortage of antibiotics during the increase in Strep A infections

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has issued three Serious Shortage Protocols (SSPs) for Phenoxymethylpenicillin products in response to a significant ongoing supply disruption due to the increase in Strep A infections.

SSP040

Phenoxymethylpenicillin 125mg/5ml oral solution sugar free

SSP041

Phenoxymethylpenicillin 250mg/5ml oral solution sugar free

SSP042

Phenoxymethylpenicillin 250mg/5ml oral solution

It allows an alternative formulation to be supplied against prescriptions for the above products when written on both NHS and private prescriptions.

All three SSPs will be in operation from Thursday 15th December 2022 to Tuesday 31st January 2023

Please note that the SSP may be amended or revoked at any time, so contractors must ensure that the SSP is still valid before each supply.
