Five more new SSPs issued in response to the shortage of antibiotics during the increase in Strep A infections
The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has issued five more Serious Shortage Protocols (SSPs) for Phenoxymethylpenicillin products in response to a significant ongoing supply disruption due to the increase in Strep A infections.

Phenoxymethylpenicillin 125mg/5ml oral solution |
SSP044 |
Phenoxymethylpenicillin 125mg/5ml oral solution sugar free |
SSP045 |
Phenoxymethylpenicillin 250mg/5ml oral solution |
SSP046 |
Phenoxymethylpenicillin 250mg/5ml oral solution sugar free |
SSP047 |
Phenoxymethylpenicillin 250mg tablets |
They allow for an alternative antibiotic to be supplied against prescriptions for the above products when written on both NHS and private prescriptions.
All five SSPs will be in operation from Friday 16th December 2022 to Tuesday 31st January 2023
Please note that the SSP may be amended or revoked at any time, so contractors must ensure that the SSP is still valid before each supply.
