NHSE Smoking Cessation Service
The new Advanced Smoking Cessation Service (SCS) launched on 10th March 2022, with community pharmacy contractors being able to register to provide the service on the NHS Business Services Authority’s (NHSBSA) Manage Your Service (MYS) portal.
Following the release of the updated service specification in June 2023, registered technicians are now able to provide the service.
The purpose of the service is to support the continued provision of smoking cessation services initiated in secondary care, in a community pharmacy following discharge. Supporting people who want to quit smoking to improve the health of England's population and reduce the burden on NHS resources.

Patient Journey
- Hospital Trusts identify smokers, provide a pre-quit assessment and start treatment
- On discharge they will be offered referral to a participating pharmacy
- Referral made via a secure electronic referral system
- Contact made between patient and pharmacy
- Transition into the smoking cessation programme
Service
- 4 week follow up with self-reported smoking status, CO test validation - advice provided to support ongoing remission
- 12 week follow up with self-reported smoking status, CO test validation - advice provided to support ongoing remission
Training Requirements
Pharmacists and registered technicians providing the service must successfully completed
- National Centre of Smoking Cessation Treatment (NCSCT) Stop Smoking Practitioner Certification
- Specialist NCSCT modules to support treatment for people with a mental health condition and pregnant women
- NCSCT module on using e-cigarettes.
And must have read the NCSCT Standard Treatment Programme (STP), which will be used to support consultations.
