FMD will require all community pharmacies to undertake two additional processes prior to supplying medicines to a patient.

These steps are:

  • Checking the anti-tampering device to ensure it is intact prior to dispensing
  • Scanning the 2D barcode on each pack to change the status of the pack from “active” to “inactive” on the National Medicine Verification System (NMVS)

In order for community pharmacies to undertake the second process the pharmacy needs to update their IT systems and connect the pharmacy to the verification system or NMVS. This is referred to as registration or on-boarding.

SecurMed, the UK National Medicines Verification Organisation, has announced that registration for the NMVS is now open and that community pharmacies can begin the process of on-boarding.

Numark advises its members to confirm with their chosen FMD IT provider whether the on-boarding process is being undertaken by the IT provider on behalf of the contractor or needs to be completed by the contractor.

Numark members who have signed up for the Numark Assist integrated FMD solution do not need to register their pharmacy as registration will be completed by EMIS Health Community Pharmacy on your behalf.

SecurMed has provided guidance for contractors who need to register their pharmacy with the NMVS.
