Delegating to your pharmacy team

  • Wales

We often talk about the need for service provision, MURs and developing relationships with other healthcare professions, but how do you find the time?  The time pressures placed upon pharmacists continue to increase and a lack of time is the most common reason cited for not being able to deliver any, or more, services.

Ultimately, we can only achieve a certain amount within any day and the key is to concentrate on the tasks which add the most value while delegating more routine tasks to members of your pharmacy team.

Steps to successful delegation

1. Define the task - confirm in your own mind that the task is suitable for delegation.

2. Select a member of staff to complete the task.

3. Assess ability and training needs - is the staff member you have chosen capable? Do you need to formulate a training plan?

Remember, we have the Numark Actavis Academy available which can fund up to 90% of your training costs.

4. Consider what resources are required - discuss what is needed to get the task done.

5. Explain the reason why the task is being delegated and why it is important.

6. Explain the required result - ensure the staff member understands what is required and how success will be measured.

7. Agree deadlines - when must the task be done by? Make sure you agree deadlines.

8. Support and communicate - how will you monitor and ensure progress is being made?
