Targeted MURs - England

  • England

From the 1st October 2011, 50 percent of all MURs in England should be performed on the national target groups.

To support our members we have summarised the key points below.

Key Points

  1. There are three national target groups; high-risk medicines, patients discharged from hospital with a change in medication and patients with respiratory disease taking specified medication.
  2. 50 per cent of all MURs undertaken should be on these target groups.
  3. Those discharged from hospital should receive an MUR within four weeks.
  4. There is no requirement as to how the 50% should be split over the three target groups.
  5. The MUR should still cover all of the patient's medication not just those medicines relating to the target group.
  6. If a contractor has already delivered a number of MURs for this year the 50 per cent target will only apply to the remaining MURs. For example if you have completed 200 MURs and have 200 left to complete, from the 1st October 100 of these will need to be on the targeted areas.
  7. From 1st October you will need to obtain a signed patient consent form to share their information with GP, PCT and NHS BSA.
  8. High Risk medicines include NSAIDs, Anticoagulants, Antiplatelets and Diuretics (a full list is available to download).
  9. Additional high risk medicines will be considered in the future.
  10. A more patient-friendly term than ‘high risk medicines' will be sought by PSNC.
