Starting a new service

It can be difficult to start offering enhanced services in your pharmacy.

Gam Amar champions services and provides many to the community in the traditional town of Allesley in Coventry, where his pharmacy is based.

Gam's top five tips for others wanting to launch a successful service are:

1. Up skill staff to free up you time

  • Dispensing technicians to be able to look after the dispensary.
  • Counter assistants to identify patients who are potentially at risk.
  • Don't forget, we have the Numark Actavis Academy available which can fund up to 90% of your training costs.

2. Trust the abilities of your staff

  • Actively break yourself away from the dispensary - it can be a pharmacists comfort zone, but it is suprising how quickly the consultation room will become second nature.

3. Practice a new service on your staff

  • Their feedback will prepare you for any questions you may not have anticipated from patients and will help to build your confidence.

4. Just do one consultation

  • Don't set yourself targets to begin with, just do one consultation and begin to build up confidence.

5. Book appointments for your quieter times

  • Book patients in for appointments when your dispensary is at its quietest. This way you can plan your days and ensure that you remain in control.
