Contaminated Sterimar nasal spray

  • Northern Ireland

The MHRA has received reports of possible bacterial contamination of Sterimar Isotonic 100ml saline nasal spray.

This product is sold online and on the high street and is used to cleanse the nasal passages. Two batches of the spray have been found to be infected with environmental bacteria normally found in soil and water.

Healthy adults are unlikely to be at risk but there is a risk for immunocompromised individuals, those with sinus or nasal problems (who may therefore be using this spray as a treatment) and those who have recently undergone surgery.

The known affected batches are FE1248b and FE1249 and consumers are asked to stop using these batches immediately and return the product to the retailer.

Signs of nasal infection include nasal and/or facial tenderness, fever and discoloured mucus. Anyone showing these signs after having used the product should be referred to their GP.

If you have any further questions on the product or affected batches please contact the manufacturer Church & Dwight UK Ltd on 0800 055 6993.
